Cultivating Unity & Equanimity Amidst the Chaos & Confusion

Yoga means UNION.

UNION implies relationship.

As Yogis we learn that what we cultivate on the mat, continues to grow and bloom off the mat. When we nurture the union within, we can more easily recognize our connection and relationship with the outer world.

Through our practice we learn that we have the potential to make an impact on everyone and everything we encounter. For example, we can either be uplifting and uniting or disruptive and divisive.

As yogis we understand that the untamed mind, and it’s bossy companion the EGO, create much of our suffering by attaching the Self to identities and stories. These mental masks we wear tend to keep us from seeing clearly through the lens of equanimity, and this can prevent us from uplifting those around us.

  • Equanimity is defined as mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation.

When we cultivate equanimity, we are more likely to share kindness and compassion with those we encounter.

On the other hand, when we identify strongly with ideas and beliefs (more masks), we tend to give away our personal power. We may believe that someone or something ‘out there’ can save us or wave a magic wand to make our suffering go away simply because we belong to or identify with a certain belief system, party or club.

When we cultivate union and equanimity, we are more inclined to see the divine within and around us, rather than the divide between us. We may not always agree with other points of view, but we more easily remain balanced and open in the midst of diversity.

And this brings us back to our practice, to the union that is yoga. That lifelong journey of self exploration. Each time we come to our mat, we have an opportunity to unite and align with the true Self. That constant, steady intelligence deep within that is pure unconditional love. When we unite with that inner wisdom, we feel inspired to practice kindness toward the Self and cultivate equanimity from the inside out. Through our practice we learn that at the depths of each of us, behind all the masks we wear, is a piece of the divine creator.

And so, as we move through this lifetime together as spiritual beings having a human experience, may we reflect on the chaos and confusion as teaching moments to help move us toward unity and equanimity.

Regardless of where you register on the spectrum of emotions, ask yourself, are you aligned with the divine within or have you given your power away to someone or something outside of ourself?

May we live like the lotus, at home in the muddy water.
